Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise
New research indicates that individuals who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing such medications must be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a return to original weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Users who have discontinued the jabs report a intense return of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," recalled a patient.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, clinicians stress that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success relies on combined behavioural support.
