Individuals who experienced abuse by church officials have voiced renewed hope after their first meeting with Pope Leo at the Holy See.

Gemma Hickey, who leads the anti-abuse organization, commented that the Pope's choice to engage with them so soon in his papacy spoke volumes about his dedication to tackling the issue.

Global Strict Policy Advocated

The group is advocating for a worldwide zero-tolerance policy that would permanently remove any clergy member who confesses to or is proven of sexually abusing a child. This approach has been implemented in the United States.

The Pope recognized that there is "opposition in some parts of the world" to this proposal, according to Hickey.

"Everyone was practical when we acknowledged that there is resistance," Hickey stated.

Inherited Challenge

The current pontiff, who assumed the role in May, has taken on this persistent issue that has haunted the Church for many years.

Earlier attempts to resolve the problem included an historic meeting on paedophilia within the institution and revisions to church laws to clearly outlaw abuse.

Personal Connection

For Hickey, who prefers they/them pronouns, the campaign for worldwide adoption of the policy is deeply meaningful. The Canadian activist revealed they were victimized by a priest who was later transferred between various churches.

"We trust this will establish the direction for his leadership, because we aim to collaborate with him," Hickey expressed. "We have the common objective, we want to eliminate abuse by religious officials."

Historic Encounter

Seven representatives of the organization, which includes survivors and advocates from more than 30 nations, engaged with the Pope in his official residence.

The discussion, initially planned for a brief period, lasted to a full hour, during which the Pope "primarily heard to us," according to Hickey.

The Pope was characterized as "quite empathetic" when hearing the account of a woman abused at a church-run institution for native youth in Canada.

They noted the Pope was "compassionate" about their own experience and appeared "very humble, funny, and approachable."

"Victims have consistently sought a seat at the table and I didn't feel like he was giving us lip service," they commented. "I felt like he was sincere, practical, and very open and keen to work with us."

Church Regulations Changes

The organization is advocating that revisions to church regulations will facilitate the adoption of the zero-tolerance policy worldwide.

They have consulted specialists and compiled materials that they will present to Pope Leo.

"He appeared interested in looking at it," they noted.

Accountability Highlighted

A recently released Vatican-commissioned document emphasized the "importance of a efficient process for the resignation and/or removal of religious officials or staff in cases of abuse or negligence."

The document also noted that victims consistently emphasized the "urgent need for church leaders and major superiors to be held accountable for negligence and cover-up."

Moving Forward

The representative shared they told the Pope at the start of their meeting: "This is as much a challenge for him to participate in a conversation as it was for us."

After the meeting, they expressed optimism for progress.

"We realise it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the conclusion, uniting and building a connection and continuing to strengthen that bond is a step in the correct path," they commented.

They concluded that they shared with Pope Leo: "Even though it's a difficult period, I feel like we can change how the story concludes - he appreciated that."
